Flute Scale for a Mountain Spirit Flute.

The scale pictured here is a traditional pentatonic scale common to most Native American flutes. Begin by playing the scale from the bottom note to the top note and back. When you are able to play this scale smoothly, you will be ready to play.

To start creating your own songs you can mix the notes in this scale in any order and create music. Remember to practice everyday for at least 10 minutes. It is important to remember that traditional native music comes from the heart. What ever music that you make is good because it is an expression of your heart. Below is the fingering for the scale.

  • Clear circle means no finger is covering a hole, it is open.
  • Black circles means you're covering the hole with one of your fingers.

Flute Playing Tips.
  1. When playing this scale, remember to cover the holes completely or you will hear a squeaky sound from the air leaking around your fingers. You will easily recognize this sound, because it is unpleasant to the ears.
  2. Don't be afraid to play around with the pressure you apply to your breath when blowing into the flute. The top 3 notes (near the mouth piece) on our flutes usually take a little more breath pressure than the bottom 3 three.
  3. Once you can easily and consistently play this scale, then it is time for you to just sit and play the flute and allow your music to flow forth. It is a good idea to find a place that is comfortable that you won't have any distractions and just play. Happy music making.
